In the last four months we have been honored to work with some of the most revered nonprofit organizations in the Ann Arbor area to help them find their next leader. Here are some tips that we wanted to pass along in case you know of a nonprofit that will be looking for a new leader in 2023.

The poor job description - no one gets excited about making you, or keeping you updated, but you are the foundation for so many HR/people operations activities.

Without you, we couldn’t effectively communicate to people what is expected of them, we couldn’t make sure that our work and activities are managed effectively, we couldn’t make sure that we are supporting people with disabilities, and we couldn’t keep managers and team members on the same page.

I’m a big fan of the principle, Hire Slow, Fire Fast, and use it all the time with my clients. At the same time, sometimes you don’t have the luxury of hiring slowly. And by slowly, I mean waiting until you have dozens of candidates to choose from, and you put people through a sixteen step process that takes weeks or months to complete.
