Allyship In The Workplace - How Can I Be A Better Ally In The Workplace?

Allyship In The Workplace

You may have been at a meeting or conference when someone said something hurtful to a colleague. Perhaps your immediate thought is "I can't believe they said that and wasn't nice" or "oof, I feel embarrassed for him/her/them in that situation." Maybe the colleague's intent wasn't meant to be hurtful but received as painful. You want to address the situation and help your colleague, but you don't know how to proceed or how to help? Perhaps the incident lingers in your mind all afternoon or the next few days, and you wonder to yourself, "what could I have done differently?"

Being an ally for your colleagues relies on you speaking up for those without a voice or power to stand up for themselves. As an ally, you use your power or privilege to help someone with less overcome silence.

Allyship at all levels is important, but how do we collectively get there? It is a constant work in progress and not an overnight solution. It is a journey of learning, listening, understanding, and showing up for your colleagues. Looking for ways to include those voices of marginalized groups and asking in meetings, "whose perspective are we missing?" Take to heart Harvard Business Review's concept of "decenter" yourself.

"As an organization with a commitment to equality and inclusion, we should take our colleague's concerns seriously. We should deal with this immediately rather than wait for a more convenient time." - Harvard Business Review
