Executive Director - Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan - Grand Rapids, MI

The Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan seeks an experienced leader for a nine-county, urban to rural, regional organization providing broad, diverse services to benefit the lives of older adults and persons with disabilities. The Director will be based at the main office in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and have an overall management responsibility for this impactful organization with a $55 million annual budget and 120 employees.

Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM)’s mission is to provide older adults and adults living with a disability an array of services designed to promote independence and dignity in their homes and their communities. AAAWM serves a nine-county region that includes Allegan, Ionia, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Newaygo, and Osceola counties, and the City of Grand Rapids. The Area Agencies on Aging are regional agencies, part of a nationwide network, created by Congress in 1974 by the federal Older Americans Act with the mission of creating home and community-based services. The AAAWM funds, advocates, plans and partners. AAAWM is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

AAAWM connects adults to quality services that promote and preserve their dignity, independence, and well-being, coordinates support and education for caregivers and leads advocacy efforts on behalf of individuals by:

  • Planning, developing, overseeing and advocating for community-based care of individuals, especially those with the greatest social and economic needs
  • Partners with providers to deliver services aimed to keep individuals in their own home as they age
  • Providing information and assistance and care management services
  • Administering federal, state, and local funds including a Medicaid funded home and community based managed long term care program

About the Opportunity

This full-time position reports to a Board of Directors composed of one elected Commissioner and one citizen from each of the nine counties and the City of Grand Rapids. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the organization achieves long-term viability, value, growth, sound financial and operational performance, including compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The Executive Director has ultimate accountability for ensuring a strong, positive, collaborative culture to reflect AAAWM values. This Executive will establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

Position Responsibilities

Guides the development of departmental work plans and conducts annual performance appraisals for each management team member. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, assigning, and guiding work of direct reports in the management team.

Administers overall operations of the agency including reviewing, evaluating, approving program and departmental initiatives and activities, allocating resources for effectiveness and implementing Board and agency directives ensuring compliance with agency, fiscal and regulatory guidelines.

Ensures fiscal integrity including submission of the annual budget to the Board of Directors and reviewing and approving all contracts. Oversee strategic planning and its implementation. Maintain agency accreditation.

Acts as liaison and as an effective communicator between the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee; the Advisory Council of the nine counties; the overseeing state agency office; federal state and local governments; the aging network and the media. Enhance the agency image by being active and visible in the communities. Visit each of the member counties at least one time every year.

Ensure agency compliance with policies and directives mandated by the Older Americans Act, Older Michiganians Act, and the Michigan Office to services on aging within the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. Complete other duties as assigned.
