Since 1909, the A2AC has been Ann Arbor's downtown center for creativity, serving patrons of all ages and artistic abilities. Our mission is "to be a contemporary forum for the visual arts through education, exploration, collaboration, and exhibition, and to engage minds, expand perspectives and inspire growth in students of all ages, teachers, artists, and the community."

Leadership

The Team: We are guided by a talented and dedicated board and staff in this work. Our nineteen-member Board of Directors provides valuable resources for the organization: governance (financial, HR, and legal support), creative (artistic guidance, marketing, and media), and fundraising support. Each board member volunteers their time and utilizes their professional skill sets to enhance the talent inside the organization. One hundred percent contribute financially, attend board meetings, and serve as community ambassadors for the organization.

Our talented and creative staff holds a combined six BFA’s and three MFA’s, and we are proud to report that the collective tenure of the leadership team is 35 years. The remaining skill sets include; graphic design, arts administration, business administration, and finance. To foster continuing education and skill development, staff enroll in professional development sessions, attend national conferences, conduct peer site visits, and attend area exhibition openings. We also rely on volunteer committees to augment staff skills and expertise.

Opportunities and Challenges

The next Executive Director will play a pivotal role in envisioning the A2AC’s next five years and beyond. Opportunities include:

  • Building the A2AC’s profile as a leading visual arts presenter and increase awareness of the A2AC brand and identity
  • Act as an advocate and spokesperson for art and artists
  • Cultivation and stewardship of a loyal family of enthusiastic donors and community members
  • Leading a growing and committed professional staff
  • Collaborating with the leadership to design compelling programming consistent with our mission, vision, and values
  • The next Executive Director will also be prepared to address the following organizational challenges:
  • Maintaining and growing the donor base following the completion of the capital campaign
  • Designing and leading an endowment campaign, which includes planned giving
  • Optimizing earned revenue potential through programming in expanded spaces
  • Maintaining an operating reserve of at least four months
  • Ensuring sustainment of the current strong leadership team and board of directors through succession planning
  • Increase the effectiveness of the retail operations both on-line and in-store
  • Building on the already successful public art program

The Position

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director works in partnership with the staff and Board to develop and execute the strategic vision that supports the organization’s mission and values. The Executive Director will be a knowledgeable and enthusiastic ambassador for the A2AC locally, regionally, and nationally as required.

Key responsibilities include

  • Leading the development and implementation of the strategic vision, establishing consensus among A2AC’s many stakeholders and constituencies
  • Overseeing the expansion of programming related to exhibition, education classes, camps, retails operations and community engagement
  • Working with the Development & Communication Director and Board of Directors to lead all aspects of fundraising and serve as the primary relationship manager for major individual and institutional funders
  • Providing supportive, collaborative leadership to a small but growing professional staff
  • Together with the Board Chair, engaging the Board and its committees in proper oversight of the organization and its activities
  • Representing the A2AC in the local and regional communities to media outlets
  • Providing responsible financial leadership while balancing organizational sustainability with artistic risk-taking

About You

The search committee seeks the following qualities in A2AC’s next leader:

  • Knowledge of and appreciation for the arts
  • Senior leadership experience
  • Experience working with Boards of Trustees and knowledge of best practices surrounding non-profit governance
  • Non-profit financial and budgeting acumen
  • Ability to provide high-level guidance to senior staff members
  • Strong leadership presence and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Strategic and operational planning experience
  • Fundraising experience, including the cultivation and stewardship of major donors
  • A commitment to becoming and/or remaining an active member of the communities the A2AC serves
